Welcome to Rowan
Real People@Rowan provides quality supported living accommodation in Napier for 20 people under 65 with a physical disability. The service is owned and operated by Presbyterian Support East Coast.
Background
The service began in 1983 as Rowan House, a converted 12 bed former nurse's home. Two purpose built four bedroom cottages were added in 2004. Originally the service supported people who were more mobile. Today's flatters have higher care needs and more of them are in wheelchairs.
Service Philosophy
Rowan's operating philosophy is to encourage independence, choice and community participation in flatters. A strong emphasis is placed on rehabilitation, and Presbyterian Support East Coast is also committed to working in partnership with flatters so that their real needs are met.
Rebuild Rowan
In 2010 Rowan had a facelift. The buildings were in need of repair and the site had flooded twice in six years, resulting in the evacuation of residents in the middle of the night and a call for an urgent rebuild.
Hawke's Bay Today ran a campaign to attract community funding, raising a total of $367,000.
The project was undertaken in two stages, beginning with the old kitchen, dining room and office. Some bedrooms were pulled down and modular cabins brought in. Stage two saw the rebuilding of the new site behind the existing facilities.
There is still more than $200,000 to be raised to complete the funding. If you would like to help contact Graeme Milne on 877 8193 ext 712.
